Local Students Continue to Form the Majority at Universiti Putra Malaysia

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) remains committed to providing quality higher education opportunities for Malaysians, with local students continuing to represent the majority of the University's student population.

Based on enrolment data for the 2023–2025 period, 18,586 local students, representing 86.8% of the University's total 21,303 students, are Malaysian citizens, while 2,717 students or 13.2% are international students. These figures clearly demonstrate that local students remain the largest segment of UPM's student community.

At the Undergraduate (UG) level, local students consistently dominate enrolment, accounting for an average of 86.8% over the past three years. In 2025 alone, UPM recorded 15,907 local students compared with 2,580 international students, bringing the total undergraduate enrolment to 18,487 students.

Meanwhile, enrolment at the Postgraduate (PG) level presents a different trend. Over the same three-year period, the student composition is almost evenly balanced, with 49.8% local students and 50.2% international students on average. This reflects UPM's strong international reputation as a preferred destination for postgraduate education and research.

The relatively higher proportion of international students observed in the University's overall enrolment is largely attributed to the concentration of international students in postgraduate programmes rather than undergraduate studies. Therefore, enrolment statistics should always be interpreted according to the level of study to provide a more accurate representation of the University's student composition.

Overall, these findings reaffirm UPM's commitment to maintaining broad access to higher education for Malaysians while simultaneously strengthening its global presence by attracting students from around the world. This balanced approach enhances UPM's standing as a leading research university and fosters a diverse, inclusive, and internationally connected academic environment.
